A Level One Stop Shop of Opportunities

Following hot on the heels of Wednesday’s Universities and Careers Fair, the Moreton Sixth A-Level taster day was a one stop shop of opportunity for Upper Five and girls new to Moreton Sixth, to experience the realities of their potential A-Level choices.

Despite the pouring rain with the odd snowflake mixed in, there was a palpable air of excitement as the Upper Five, joined by girls who will be new to Moreton Sixth in September gathered in the library, out of uniform and looking every inch the Lower Sixth class of 2024!

Welcoming the cohort, the Principal, Mr Brewer, talked about the unique relationship fostered between sixth form teachers and students, and the joy as an A-Level teacher, of being part of a journey which sees girls reach for new academic horizons.

In Moreton Sixth we pride ourselves in not restricting choices to option blocks. Instead, any combination of subjects can be considered, with our Academic Head, Mrs Champion building the A-Level timetable around those diverse choices. With this in mind, the A-Level Taster Day, timetabled by Senior Sixth Form tutor Mrs Lang, allowed girls to experience their own cocktail of STEM, MFL, Humanities and creative subjects, reflecting the much more flexible and diverse requirements of many of the top and most competitive universities.

Reflecting on the day, Mrs Lang commented: “What is so exciting is to see the range of subjects the girls are considering, with plenty of interest in every subject from English, Economics and Business to Chemistry and Photography; Fine Art and Textiles to Classical Civilisation. As an all-girls school in the senior section, it was great to see our commitment to STEM reflected in the numbers opting to experience Maths, Further Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology. 25 girls chose Maths/Further Maths as one of their lessons, whilst nearly 40 attended the Psychology taster lesson.”

Principal Michael Brewer added: “It is always exciting to meet pupils as they are on the cusp of Sixth Form studies. Focused by the imminence of GCSE exams, they can see the next stage of their studies, and the extent to which they will be able to shape their own academic futures. Our girls, joined by a number who will be joining in September, were on excellent form at the start of the day. Seeing them around the site, attending A-Level lessons, they looked every bit like they belonged in Moreton Sixth. Indeed, we cannot wait for them to join us and help shape their journey, and the school, next year.”

The A-Level taster day rounded off with tea and cake with the Moreton Enterprise (ME) Directors who introduced the future ME team 2024-25 to their future roles. There was plenty to talk about as the girls prepared for the final event of the day, Mocktails and Canapés, hosted by Moreton Sixth.
