Moreton Hall Opens Its Doors to Young Performers for a Taste of Musical Theatre

Moreton Hall’s Drama Department is inviting local school pupils to experience the magic of musical theatre in a special evening designed to celebrate the performing arts and inspire the next generation of young performers.

Taking place on Monday 30 November, the free event will welcome pupils in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 for an exciting programme of practical workshops, behind-the-scenes experiences and live performances, culminating in a production of the musical Little Shop of Horrors, performed by Moreton Hall’s own Senior School pupils.

The evening will begin with a drama workshop led by a professional choreographer, allowing visiting pupils to develop their performance skills. This will be followed by supper, a behind-the-scenes tour of Moreton Hall’s professional-grade Holroyd Community Theatre, and the opportunity to watch the Senior School production.

The initiative reflects Moreton Hall’s commitment to championing the arts and ensuring that young people have opportunities to experience the confidence and creativity that participation in Drama can bring.

Director of Drama, Michael Jenkins, said:

“At Moreton, we are proud that Drama is a key feature of our Key Stage 2 and 3 curriculum, where all pupils study the subject. We also have a thriving GCSE and A Level provision, where our pupils routinely achieve results placing them in the top 1% nationally.

“At a time when Drama is facing a decline in uptake, I am thrilled that we are able to offer this unique opportunity for young people. It will give them the chance to participate in a professionally led, focused workshop before experiencing live theatre for themselves – a wonderful ‘see it, be it’ opportunity.

“I hope we can fill the theatre with young people and inspire them to discover, or rediscover, a love of performing arts. We are particularly proud to be able to offer the entire experience free of charge, ensuring that as many young people as possible can take part.”

The afternoon and evening will begin at 4pm with the drama workshop, followed by supper at 5.30pm and a behind-the-scenes theatre tour at 6pm. The evening will culminate in the performance of Little Shop of Horrors at 7pm.

All activities, including supper and the theatre performance, will be provided free of charge.

Moreton Hall hopes the event will provide an opportunity for local schools to engage with its thriving Drama Department, celebrate the value of the performing arts and encourage more young people to discover the opportunities that theatre can offer.
