Sporting excellence, Sporting achievement, Sporting enjoyment, Sporting Spirit

Our Mission: Inspiring a Lifelong Love of Sport

At Moreton Hall, our sporting ethos is rooted in our core values: Embrace, Achieve, and Enjoy. We aim to inspire every pupil to develop a lifelong love of sport, not just through performance, but through passion, participation, and personal growth. Our mission is to ensure that every child leaves school with the confidence, skills, and motivation to stay active for life, recognising the importance of physical activity for both mental and physical well-being.

Our Vision

Physical Education is more than just sport; it’s about nurturing a lifelong love of movement, building confidence, and encouraging excellence in all its forms.

  • Embrace: We encourage every pupil to try new activities, participate fully, and take on new challenges.
  • Enjoy: We celebrate the joy of movement and promote physical wellbeing for life.
  • Achieve: We focus on personal bests, skill development, and the value of teamwork.

We encourage all pupils to embrace new experiences by engaging in a wide variety of sports, including lacrosse, hockey, netball, equestrian, archery, squash, kayaking, swimming, tennis, athletics, and cricket. Through weekly PE lessons, after-school activities, and regular fixtures, children are supported in trying new challenges and discovering their individual interests. Inclusive opportunities, expert coaching, and a supportive environment help every child to grow in confidence and enthusiasm. At the heart of our programme is the drive to achieve – whether that means reaching personal bests, mastering a new skill, or working effectively as part of a team. We celebrate progress at every level, from first-time participants to competitive athletes, encouraging all pupils to push their boundaries and take pride in their accomplishments.

We also offer academic pathways in PE, including AQA GCSE and A Level Physical Education, as well as the Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity, providing pupils with the opportunity to explore the theoretical and practical aspects of sport and develop a deeper understanding of physical performance, health, and fitness.

Above all, we believe sport should be enjoyed. Fun, friendship, and a strong sense of team spirit are central to everything we do. Whether competing in inter-divisional tournaments, exploring alternative sports through School Games pathways, or simply enjoying the buzz of being active, pupils experience the joy of movement in a positive and inclusive setting.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse holds a special place in our hearts at Moreton Hall, a sport long ingrained in the history books with a spot on the 1st Lacrosse team something that many aspire to achieve during their time here. As one of our flagship sports, Moreton Hall has long been synonymous with excellence in school lacrosse, consistently performing at the highest level in regional and national competitions. We are incredibly proud of the thriving lacrosse culture we’ve developed, where students are encouraged to compete, improve, and most importantly, enjoy the game.

As 2024 National Champions, our commitment to lacrosse reflects our bold ambition: to see a Moreton Hall athlete represent Great Britain at the 2028 Olympic Games. We continue to invest in our programme through elite coaching – led by Carina Walsh, Senior Wales Coach – top-tier facilities, and the region’s only bespoke lacrosse scholarship scheme. Our comprehensive development pathway is designed to nurture talent at every stage, ensuring our players receive the support and guidance needed to reach their full potential. With the right mindset and training, we believe Moreton Hall athletes can achieve greatness on the international stage.

Opportunities and Fixtures

Moreton offers a broad range of sporting opportunities for pupils of all ages and abilities. From inclusive weekly PE lessons and diverse sports activities to competitive teams, specialist coaching, and regular fixtures, every child is encouraged to take part and thrive. Pupils also enjoy inter-divisional competitions, tournaments, festivals, and the chance to explore alternative sports through School Games pathways; all within an environment that values participation, effort, and team spirit.

Elite Athlete Pathway

The Elite Athlete Pathway is a specialised initiative aimed at developing the skills, discipline, and mindset required to excel in sport. It offers students access to advanced coaching, strength and conditioning sessions, nutritional advice, and sports psychology workshops. We believe that this holistic approach will help your child achieve their sporting goals, whether at the school, regional, or national level. The pathway is not only about athletic development but also aims to nurture character, resilience, and leadership skills – qualities that will serve them well both within and outside their sporting platform.

Hockey

Hockey is a key part of school life, offering pupils from Reception to Sixth Form the opportunity to grow in skill, confidence, and character. Pupils benefit from expert coaching, regular fixtures from U8s to 1st XI, and the chance to be part of two vibrant senior squads. High-performing athletes are supported through our Elite Athlete Programme and specialist coaching in technical, tactical, physical, and psychological areas.

Many pupils progress to county development and academy centres, national performance centres, and the school regularly qualifies for the Midlands finals. Strong partnerships with clubs such as Shropshire, Wrexham, Oswestry, and Whitchurch Hockey Clubs, as well as the England Hockey Talent Academy, provide additional opportunities for growth and development beyond school. Whether just starting out or aiming for elite competition, every pupil is supported and inspired to reach their full potential through hockey at Moreton Hall.

Netball

Netball is a key sport at Moreton Hall, with teams and training sessions available for all age groups. We are proud to offer regular practices that support skill development, teamwork, and enjoyment at every level. Our pupils have the opportunity to represent the school in both county and district tournaments, gaining valuable experience and showcasing their talents in competitive settings. Whether playing for fun or striving for excellence, every child is encouraged to get involved and enjoy being part of a supportive netball community.

Tennis

Tennis at Moreton is a cherished activity, enjoyed by players of all levels. Whether participating casually during games sessions or on warm summer evenings, or competing at a higher level for the school and beyond, there’s something for everyone.

Our tailored tennis program caters to the goals of each player, offering year-round coaching from professional instructors. Lessons are available in various formats: individual, pairs, or groups, ensuring flexibility and personalised attention. The summer term, a highlight of the tennis calendar, is bustling with opportunities. Players can represent the school in friendly matches or enter LTA competitions, with the potential to progress to nationwide events. A beloved new tradition is the school championships, where players compete to earn the prestigious title of school champion. Whether you’re aiming for fun, skill improvement, or competitive success, tennis at Moreton promises an engaging and rewarding experience.

Athletics

Athletics is a key part of our vibrant sporting life. We offer pupils a comprehensive athletics programme that caters to all abilities, from those discovering a new passion to those competing at an elite level. Our students take part in a wide range of competitions, including District Meets and County Cups, providing regular opportunities to challenge themselves and represent the school with pride. With access to excellent coaching, tailored training, and well-equipped facilities, pupils are supported in developing their speed, strength, and technique across all track and field disciplines. Whether aiming for personal bests or podium finishes, every athlete is encouraged to strive for excellence and fulfil their potential.

Badminton

Badminton is rapidly growing in popularity at Moreton, both within the curriculum and during games sessions. The sport has captured the enthusiasm of many, with courts often filled to capacity. This increasing interest has led to the organisation of friendly matches, much to the delight of players and supporters alike.
Our program has already achieved notable success, with the U14 team proudly crowned North Shropshire County Champions in 2023. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, badminton at Moreton offers a vibrant and supportive environment for all.
