Moreton Hall’s 1st Lacrosse team enjoyed the honour of once again stepping out onto the prestigious StoneX Stadium pitch for a showcase exhibition match against Berkhamsted School.
The fixture has quickly become a highlight of the lacrosse calendar. Berkhamsted are fierce competitors and, as a team we do not meet during our regular fixture programme, provide an exciting challenge. More significantly, the occasion offers our players the opportunity to be part of an event that showcases girls’ sport on an extraordinary stage.
Playing in front of a packed crowd at a professional sports stadium, with the match also professionally live-streamed, is an experience few school players have the opportunity to enjoy. Remarkably, this was Moreton’s fourth appearance at StoneX – an opportunity we never take for granted.
Moreton’s 1st team has established a formidable reputation and has enjoyed an impressive start to the season. Arriving at StoneX as the away side and facing a highly accomplished Berkhamsted squad, the ‘Queens of the North’ knew they would need to be at their very best. Of course, they rose to the challenge in emphatic fashion.
The message from coach Carina Walsh, Head of Lacrosse at Moreton, was simple: start quickly, play fearlessly and play together. Moreton did exactly that, scoring three goals in the opening minutes and immediately putting Berkhamsted on the back foot.
The early momentum soon developed into a commanding team performance across the pitch. Moreton won the majority of the draw controls, attacked with pace and confidence and produced some superb defensive play, supported by outstanding goalkeeping from our Lower Fifth goalkeepers.
Berkhamsted, however, were never going to make things easy. They continued to press, looking for opportunities to break Moreton’s rhythm and responding strongly whenever chances arose. Moreton remained composed, answering each challenge and maintaining control of the game. The team looked more than just a great school side: they looked like an outstanding and professional women’s sports team and we could not be prouder of them.
Most impressive was the contribution made by every member of the team. There were standout moments across the pitch, but this was a performance defined by teamwork rather than individual accolades. Physicality, tactical awareness, skill, resilience and composure combined in an outstanding display from a united group of young women who embraced the occasion and showed exactly what Moreton Hall lacrosse is all about.
The team represented Moreton with enormous pride, demonstrating not only the quality of school lacrosse but also the strength and excitement of girls’ sport on a truly special stage.
This fantastic occasion comes at an exciting time for Moreton Hall, coinciding with the launch of our new Lacrosse Centre of Excellence. Building on the school’s outstanding record of national and international success, the Centre is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of female lacrosse players through specialist coaching, tailored development programmes and scholarship opportunities. The performance at StoneX was a wonderful demonstration of the talent, teamwork and ambition that lie at the heart of this initiative.
We would like to thank all of our supporters, both in the stadium and watching online. We may have had fewer numbers in that crowd as the away team, but your voices (and cowbells) could certainly be heard!
Finally, our sincere thanks go to Berkhamsted School for once again inviting Moreton Hall to be part of such a memorable occasion. The opportunity to play at StoneX and to showcase girls’ lacrosse in this way is something we greatly value, and we are incredibly grateful to have been part of it for a fourth time.
