The Holroyd Community Theatre’s Creative Director and Director of Drama at Moreton Hall, Michael Jenkins, brings Shakespeare’s The Tempest to life in an exciting drama workshop for Year 6 pupils.
Gobowen Primary School’s Year 6 pupils recently had the opportunity to experience Shakespeare in a completely different way, as Michael Jenkins, Creative Director of The Holroyd Community Theatre visited the school to deliver an interactive drama workshop based on The Tempest.
With a class of 30 pupils, just a few sheets of silk and a plastic lobster were all that was needed to transform the classroom into the world of Shakespeare’s famous play!
The one-hour session began with a fun and energetic warm-up designed to get the pupils focused and engaged. The children were also challenged to demonstrate their knowledge of popular advertising slogans before diving into the world of The Tempest.
Every pupil was given a role to play in recreating the famous storm at the heart of the story. Characters and elements included Gonzalo, Alonso, the sea, a jellyfish and of course, the all important lobster!
The workshop encouraged the pupils to use their imagination, creativity and teamwork to bring the story to life, while discovering that Shakespeare can be both accessible and great fun.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the session, with several pupils expressing an interest in drama and acting following the workshop.
The Holroyd Community Theatre is committed to inspiring young people through creativity and the performing arts, giving pupils the opportunity to explore drama in an engaging and accessible way.
