Lacrosse Flags Festival

Moreton pupils were at the heart of an exciting weekend of lacrosse at the annual Northern Flags Lacrosse Festival, held at Rochdale Lacrosse Club. Oxton Lacrosse Club reached three finals across both days.

In Saturday’s U15 final, Oxton side had their final against Heaton, with Katie (U4) playing for Oxton, and Lily (L5) representing Mersey. It was an end-to-end game, and although Oxton led throughout, Mersey drew level just before the final whistle. The match went to sudden death, where Mersey took the title. It was an outstanding game and a superb performance from both teams and both Moreton players. Congratulations to Lily on her victory!

Sunday brought more success, with Oxton U18s and Oxton Ladies 1st Team both taking on Timperley in their respective finals. The U18 side, with only ten players, included seven Moreton pupils on the team sheet, with Miss Jones coaching. Another nail-biting of a match and, although Oxton held a lead for much of the game, Timperley fought back hard to set up a tense finish. Oxton held on for a 13–12 victory, becoming U18 champions for the third consecutive year. Congratulations to Lizzie, Emily, Lana and Mima (Upper Sixth), Matilda and Alexa (Lower Sixth), and Darcy (Upper Fifth) on their success, as well as to Miss Jones and injured player Nina (Upper Fifth), who has played all season and was there to support the team.

Later that afternoon, Lizzie (Upper Sixth), Matilda and Alexa (Upper Fifth) took to the pitch again alongside Miss Jones and Old Moretonians Annabel, Kiara, Romilly and Eliza, this time facing Timperley in the Senior Flags final. Timperley scored first in what began as another fiercely contested game, and Oxton led by just one goal at half time. In the second half, however, they showed their quality, pulling away to secure an emphatic 17–6 victory and the title of Senior Flags Champions.

Congratulations to all of our Moretonians, past and present, on their fantastic weekend and on a superb season representing their club.
