Dancer, Singer and all round Showman, Strictly Judge, TV travel show presenter with Anton and Giovanni’s ‘Adventure’s in Sicily’, Novelist and National Treasure, Anton Du Beke certainly lives life to the full! In Booka Bookshop’s event in a packed Holroyd Community Theatre at Moreton Hall, Anton reflected on his life in showbiz, delighting fans with his hilarious anecdotes, frequently stepping to the front of the stage to showcase a step or a hold.
In conversation with Caroline Lang who was hosting her 50th event with Booka, Anton talked about his latest novel ‘The Royal Show’ and reflected on how a lifelong passion for story-telling has shaped his journey both as an author and a choreographer. Many of Strictly’s most memorable moments have starred Anton and whilst making the audience cry with laughter, he also spoke with warmth and affection about dancing with celebrities such as Ann Widdecombe and Susannah Constantine.
Now a member of the judging panel, Anton is in no doubt that the success of Strictly is because it belongs to the audience, reminding us that the show wouldn’t work without their involvement and engagement, as they vote for who stays and who goes through to the dance off. A legend to many in the audience, he talked about his own favourite showbiz legend, Bruce Forsyth, an all-round variety man who Anton models a character on in his new novel.
Generous with his time, an hour-long queue ensured that every person in the audience had the chance for a chat and a photo, as well as a dedication in their copy of the book. One of those in the queue was Martha from Upper Sixth who said: “Meeting Anton felt like meeting an old friend. People say never meet your heroes but I did, and he was brilliant!”
