Women’s Health Under Examination for Would-be Medics

The morning began with an introduction and presentations from some of the hosting consultant and registrar obstetricians and gynaecologists. They gave us a powerful insight into the different pathways that doctors take to get to their present role, as well as mentioning work life balance, and the wide range of opportunities available for continued learning throughout your career.

We then split into groups to rotate around simulations focusing on different skills and procedures. Two of the simulations were more obstetrics orientated, where we were taught (the very basics!) of different procedures used by obstetricians when delivering babies. We were able to try these skills out ourselves, including helping a breech delivery and using forceps.

The other, more gynaecology focused simulation skill we tried was using operating tools used during key hole surgery, using cameras and a screen image to see what you are doing. Thankfully we did this only using small practice hoops and rings – not real patients! – as controlling surgical instruments on the end of a thirty-centimetre stick is much harder than it seems at first glance!

As well as getting a taster for these different procedures and the skills required to perform them well, we were able to ask many questions throughout the morning. All of the doctors running the sessions were very friendly and happy to help and there were also fourth year medical students currently studying at Keele medical school who were able to tell us about their experiences studying medicine.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience that was really interesting and inspiring for all. Many thanks to Mrs Peel for helping arrange this opportunity for us!
