Pastoral Care & Wellbeing

“The staff at Moreton put the wellbeing of my child at the forefront of everything they do. They are supported in a subtle and gentle way to build their resilience, which enables them to tackle challenges with more confidence than before.”

Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is at the heart of our school community, embodying our mission to ‘Embrace, Achieve and Enjoy.’

We believe that every student deserves a supportive environment where they can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Our pastoral system is designed to nurture the individual needs of the student, promoting their wellbeing and personal development. By focusing on building strong relationships between students, staff and families, we create a culture where everyone feels valued, respected and empowered to reach their full potential.

At the core of our pastoral care framework are the foundational values of community, kindness and aspiration. We foster a sense of belonging among students, encouraging them to connect with one another and engage actively within our school community.
Through various initiatives such as mentoring programmes and peer support networks, we help students develop a strong sense of community, which enhances their overall school experience.

Kindness is woven into the fabric of our pastoral approach. We emphasise understanding, and respect among students and staff, creating an environment where acts of kindness are celebrated and modelled. This not only contributes to a positive atmosphere but also encourages students to extend kindness beyond the school gates, cultivating responsible and compassionate members of society.

Our commitment to aspiration drives our pastoral initiatives, encouraging students to set personal goals while providing necessary support and resources to achieve them.

By embracing each student’s unique journey, promoting a community rooted in kindness, and inspiring aspirations, we create a nurturing and enriching environment where every student can truly ‘Embrace, Achieve, and Enjoy’ their educational experience.

The Tutor System

At Moreton, we believe that close individual attention is paramount to each pupil’s success and well-being. This philosophy is embodied in our comprehensive tutoring system, designed to provide every girl in the Senior School with a dedicated mentor and guide throughout each year.

Tutors work closely with their tutees to monitor academic progress across all subjects, offering insightful guidance and strategies for improvement. Beyond academics, tutors play a crucial role in inspiring future aspirations, encouraging girls to explore their interests and consider various pathways for their post-school lives.

Crucially, the tutor provides a consistent and continual source of support, acting as a confidential sounding board and a familiar point of contact for any concerns.

Our tutors serve as the vital liaison between a pupil’s academic teachers and the pastoral staff. This integrated approach ensures that a holistic view of each girl is maintained, allowing for seamless communication regarding academic performance, personal development, and overall well-being.

Tutor groups are kept intentionally small, with approximately eight pupils per group, fostering a supportive and close-knit environment. Every pupil benefits from an individual meeting with her personal tutor once per week, providing dedicated time for in-depth discussions about progress, challenges, and future plans. For pupils in Remove to Upper Five, these individual sessions are complemented by group tutor time on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, allowing for collaborative discussions, shared learning experiences, and the development of strong peer relationships within the tutor group.

Wellbeing

Our Wellbeing Programme takes a comprehensive and holistic approach to pupil wellbeing. Central to our approach is the Student Wellbeing Charter. All pupils are invited to commit to promoting their own and their peers’ physical, social and emotional health. The Charter promotes a culture of kindness, inclusivity and community amongst pupils.

Our Wednesday morning Wellbeing Assembly programme is both directive and responsive in the topics it covers. It introduces students to topics that promote a positive approach to wellbeing and mental health such as guided meditation and mindfulness. The assembly programme also provides students with the opportunity to hear from a range of inspiring speakers on topics such as developing a growth mindset, empathy and bravery. The assembly programme is complemented by wellbeing libraries and activities that are promoted in the boarding houses.

Over the course of the year, Wellbeing Workshops are arranged for parents and pupils. These workshops aim to develop a positive wellbeing mindset and culture. Our speakers tackle important issues such as body image, emotional literacy, and fueling your bodies for exercise.

We have partnered with the Wellbeing Hub, an expert-led, evidence-based resource for meeting the social, emotional, and educational needs of children and young people. This resource is available to our staff and parents to empower them to support and nurture the wellbeing and mental health of our pupils. The Hub provides free webinars, resources and access to professionals to support the wellbeing of the Moreton community.

With kindness and community at the very heart of our wellbeing approach, we have established a successful peer support system at Moreton. This comprises Pupil Mentors and Wellbeing Ambassadors. The Pupil Mentors are members of our Lower Sixth who mentor younger pupils providing a listening ear, help and support to their mentees. The Wellbeing Ambassadors promote wellbeing initiatives amongst their peers. They meet termly with the Director of Wellbeing to provide the pupil voice for their peers and to identify topics our pupils want to hear about in the wellbeing assemblies and workshops. The Pupil Mentors and Wellbeing Ambassadors are supported by the Wellbeing Prefect and House Prefects.

Health Centre

The school’s onsite medical centre prides itself in delivering high standards of care and promoting the life skills required to manage all aspects of health. The in-patient facilities for pupils who are unwell are overseen by a registered nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, during term time.

Each healthcare professional within the Health Centre team brings their own specialist training to their role, including asthma management, sexual health, sports injury management, smoking cessation, women’s health and emergency medicine.

The school works in partnership with a local surgery and is visited by the school doctors twice weekly. Students also have access to a counsellor, who visits the Health Centre weekly. The nurses liaise closely with other medical specialists and can arrange physiotherapy, dental and eye appointments locally as necessary.

Food and Nutrition

Moreton Hall proudly has its own in-house catering team that provides consistently high-quality food. All of the meals are cooked freshly using produce from local suppliers. This includes everything from boarding house supplies, afternoon snacks, daily meals, to formal dinners.

There is plenty on offer for each meal time from a warm pain au chocolate at breakfast to a vast salad bar and a hot nutritious meal at lunch and supper.

All allergies and dietary needs are catered for by our trained chefs.

Calendar events are joyfully celebrated with cultural dishes and decorations.

Being an in-house catering team, we can listen to the students and involve them in meal options and ideas, this is done through a termly food committee meeting where each year group is represented.

"The girls are highly complimentary about the school’s pastoral care. They say they are very happy and have good relationships with their teachers, whom they see as caring for their well-being and academic progress."
