Helping to Find our Voice

At Moreton Hall, the importance of the spoken word is truly recognised. Pupils are encouraged to attend Spoken English lessons to equip them with the skills and confidence to support them through their studies and become effective communicators.

All pupils have the opportunity to attend Spoken English lessons as an optional “extra”, taught in small groups of 3-4. During the year they may choose to participate in Speech and Drama Festivals as well as Public Speaking and Debating competitions.

Spoken English

Spoken English pupils prepare for an English Speaking Board Assessment; they give a short talk on a favourite subject, present memorised poetry or drama, read aloud from a favourite book and respond to questions from the assessor and listening group. The experience of speaking in front of an audience helps children to grow in confidence and poise.

As pupils entering into Year 12 (Lower 6) attend a weekly one hour session, learning the skills of effective oral communication and in the Spring term present their work for the English Speaking Board’s Advanced Certificate in Spoken English, accredited by QCA and included in the UCAS Tariff.

Confident, articulate A Level candidates are then well prepared to meet the challenges of University life and their future careers.

Cramner Awards Competition

HRH The Prince of Wales, patron of the Prayer Book Society praised Moreton Hall students who were among the finalists, held at Lambeth Palace, London.

Young Speaker of the Year

Awarded to Simran “Spoken English has helped my confidence and ability to communicate in front of a wide audience, whilst increasing my skills.”

ESB - Young Speaker of the Year

Megan competed against 13,000 applicants to be selected the English Speaking Board’s Young Speaker of the Year For five years Moreton Hall students have been selected for this prestigious achievement.

BPW Public Speaking Competition

Moreton Hall’s debating team were crowned UK champions at the Business and Professional Women’s event held in Belfast.
