After a successful run at the ‘Berko 10s’ tournament, which saw Moreton win every game but one where they drew 3-3 with Berkhamsted, it was clear the two teams were tough competition for one another and big contenders nationally this season. So, when Berkhamsted School got in touch to invite Moreton to play in an exhibition match at StoneX Stadium, the home of Saracens, we couldn’t say no. After some last minute organising and working out logistically how we could make the round trip to London work, we were ready. The 1st Lacrosse team left school excited for the trip ahead. They arrived before 4pm at a huge stadium, the likes of which none of the team had ever played Lacrosse in before, and were directed to the changing rooms. The team were eager to get out on the pitch and soak up the atmosphere, so they got kitted up and headed out to walk around the pitch and take in the surroundings. As warm ups started, the seats began to fill with loud and excited Berkhamsted students, so it was comforting to see several of our loyal Moreton parents arrive and take up centre seats, complete with bells, blue foam fingers and very loud voices!
After stick checks, team talks and a huge team cheer, the game began. Berko drew first blood, but Moreton answered quickly with a goal from Phoebe, followed by another goal from Romily. A third goal from Emma saw Moreton take a 3-1 lead. Berkhamsted were relentless and the crowds of Berko supporters continued to grow, with the crowd behind them they scored again and as the half time whistle blew the score stood at 3-2.
The second half continued much the same, with both teams defending well and shutting down continued attacking attempts. Moreton were strong on the draw and had a lot of possession, but it was Berko who scored first bringing the game back level. Another goal from Phoebe put Moreton back in front, but a flurry of yellow cards meant Moreton had to dig deep to stay in control of the game. Berko scored off a free position bringing the scores back level, but Moreton answered quickly with a great goal from Lizzie! Another card and another free position and Berkhamsted drew back level again. Moreton gained possession and had one final attempt on goal. Unfortunately, a great save followed swiftly by a final whistle meant the game finished level, but what an epic performance from both sides and an amazing game for the crowds to enjoy. The 1st Lacrosse team made Moreton Hall proud and they had a truly once in a lifetime experience that has given them confidence for the rest of the season as they prepare for the Challenge Cup and National Schools 2024. Thank you to everybody who watched and cheered the team on from home, and a huge thank you to the group of parents who travelled hundreds of miles to cheer us on!
“Being asked to play in the Stone X stadium was such an honour and a surreal experience. Something that we will always remember as the 1st team!” – Emma, Co Captain
“It was the most incredible experience we’ve ever had, playing in a stadium that size with such a big audience is something we will remember forever! It was an amazing team performance and we are all so proud of each other and how far we’ve come together.” – Karina, Co Captain
“We are immensely proud of the 1st Lacrosse team for the way they performed. They were playing in a stadium with crowds roaring for the opposition, yet they remained composed and played with poise and skill. I couldn’t have asked for more from the girls. We are also extremely grateful to Berkhamsted School for providing our students with such a wonderful experience, one that for some, will be a lifetime experience, and one that I am sure will be etched in the memories of our players for the rest of their lives. This team is already showing what they are capable of and we look forward to seeing all they can achieve and experience this season. Finally, we must again thank all of the parents who travelled to London to support the team, the girls wouldn’t be where they are without that support!’ – Miss Walsh, Head of Lacrosse
