Moreton Hosts Fifth Annual Mini Model UN Conference

Moreton Hall proudly hosted its fifth annual Mini Model UN Conference earlier this term. Following four incredibly successful years, the pressure was on to raise the bar—and it certainly delivered. With ten schools in attendance, each bringing at least two delegations, this year’s conference was the largest yet. Over 130 students from Year 6 to Year 9 participated, contributing to a lively, engaging atmosphere filled with spirited debate and inspiring ideas.

Delegates were divided into six committees—Health, Human Rights, Political, Youth, Environment, and Special (Agriculture)—each tackling two debate topics linked to the overarching theme: “Protect Our Planet, Protect Our Future.” This theme was selected by the Senior MUN students after a year of thoughtful discussion, reflecting a shared recognition that climate change and environmental sustainability are among the most urgent global challenges. Topics ranged from climate refugees to the decreasing availability of agricultural land, sparking discussions that mirrored the complexity and diversity of views present in real-world diplomacy.

A highlight of the day was the keynote address by Kaisa Golding, who has over twenty years of international experience working across business, inter-governmental and charity sectors. She challenged delegates to consider how language, culture, and perspective shape international negotiation and cooperation, offering insights that enriched the day’s debates and resonated with both students and staff alike.

Mini MUN aims to introduce younger pupils to global affairs and political debate in an accessible and supportive environment. By debating from the perspective of their assigned country, students gain confidence in public speaking, practice critical thinking, and develop diplomatic skills—all while learning about global issues alongside peers their own age.
The conference also offered valuable leadership experience for Senior MUN students, many of whom chaired the committees after months of preparation. A special thank you goes to Rovian and Chloe, who returned post-A Levels to help chair.

Miss Pritchard shared: “I’m immensely proud of all that our students have achieved, from awards for some of our youngest debaters in Year 6 – Ella and Sabrina – to the professional and supportive Chairs who ensured the whole day ran so smoothly. My special thanks goes to Jess who works tirelessly to develop this activity at Moreton; writing resolutions, attending conferences, training chairs and helping younger students on their MUN journey.”

As Jess, Secretary General of Senior MUN, said: “Moreton’s Mini MUN offers a supportive environment to learn and give Model UN debating a go. These are skills for life!”
