The stage of the Globe Theatre beckons for thespian Jessica (Upper Four) after winning the regional final of the English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare competition.
Jessica recently competed in the regional final of the ESU Shakespeare Competition. This was the second round, with Jessica up against four accomplished actors from schools such as Concord College. Tensions were high, and anticipation filled the room, but Jessica persevered to deliver a transformative performance. London here we come!
She performed superbly, taking on all the direction she’d been given. Mr Jenkins commented: “I’m thrilled to tell you that Jessica has been awarded a place in the final. She performed with an accomplished level of skill and commitment to her character. Jessica performed as Ophelia from Hamlet, in her chosen scene Ophelia is seeking comfort from her father after a strange and disturbing interaction with Hamlet. Jessica took the audience on a journey, painting the bizarre interaction for the audience with a great sense of character.”
Modest as ever, Jessica confirmed that she had never envisaged such success: “I didn’t expect to get through at all. I am so thankful for the encouragement I have received all the way. To be able to perform at Shakespeare’s Globe, is a dream come true. I’d like to thank the Drama department for the continuous support, encouragement and the opportunity.”
Principal Sarah Davis said: “This is an amazing accomplishment and one for which Jessica should be rightly very proud. Performing the complexities of Shakespeare is demanding and we wish her all the very best as she now goes on to perform at Shakespeare’s most prestigious theatre.”
The grand final takes place on Friday 23 June, at The Globe Theatre, London.
