A Stunning Performance at National Schools Lacrosse by the U19B Team

In the second of our celebrations of Moreton Hall’s ‘Queens of the North’ status in the world of National Schools Lacrosse, we focus on the U19B team who performed magnificently to make the last 16 in their tournament. Described by their coaches as “a small but mighty squad”, the girls triumphed over many of the top Lacrosse playing schools in the country.

A demanding first day of matches on Saturday saw the U19B team finish second in their group on goal difference, qualifying them for a much coveted place in the prestigious final day. Pitted against teams fielding many older and more experienced players, the girls did brilliantly with notable games played on the first day against Berkhamsted, Benenden and St Albans. On Sunday, victory against St Paul’s was a sweet success and although the team lost to St Catherine’s, Bramley, it was a hard fought match which gave the eventual U19B champions a real run for their money. Finishing in the top 16 in their tournament, their success was described by their coach Lulu Lewin as “a phenomenal achievement for this group of young players.”

Reflecting on the experience the U19B captains were bursting with pride. Evie (Lower Sixth) said: “It was an incredible experience to reach the top 16 in the country in the U19B competition. Our team made an amazing effort and we will go back fighting even harder next year.” Nell (Lower Sixth) added: “I am so proud of how we worked as a team to play some notoriously tough schools. We are already looking forward to the return matches next year!”

Reflecting on the weekend, the U19B team were unanimous, this was about teamwork and giving their all. Grace (Upper Five) in defence said: “We played really well as a unit. The experience of playing against older girls will be really beneficial for next year.” Cecily (Upper Five) added: “We all gave 110% – everyone really stepped up their game.” Hilary (Upper Five) playing mid agreed: “We only had one sub so we all had to give it our all, even when we were very tired – and we did!”

Playing in attack, Claudia (Upper Five) relished the opportunity to go up against unfamiliar teams: “It was great to play against some of the southern teams we don’t usually play and to get their take on defence.” This determination to build on the experience in readiness for next year’s Nationals was shared by the whole team.

Glowing with pride at what had been achieved by Moreton Hall’s senior teams, Principal Sarah Davis said: “All the girls from both teams should be incredibly proud of their success (both personal and as a team) over the weekend. I was incredibly proud of everyone involved. Very well done to pupils and staff and thank you to all the parents for their support.”
