The National Schools’ Lacrosse Championships are always one of the highlights of the sporting calendar, and this year Moreton Hall once again showed exactly why its lacrosse programme is held in such high regard. Competing against many of the country’s biggest and most established lacrosse schools, Moreton’s teams displayed outstanding talent, resilience and determination throughout the week. While this year’s championships did not bring every result the school had hoped for, they were still a powerful celebration of everything Moreton lacrosse represents: ambition, character, teamwork and the ability to rise to every challenge.
Across all age groups, Moreton’s players competed with enormous heart and distinction. From senior squads carrying the weight of expectation to younger teams announcing themselves on the national stage, the championships offered countless moments of pride and proved, once again, that Moreton’s small size is matched by extraordinary spirit.
1st Team
The 1st Team arrived at Nationals with an exceptional record already behind them and a reputation as one of the top school sides in the country. Although the final standings did not reflect the full extent of their ability, this team has enjoyed a remarkable season and should be remembered for far more than one difficult tournament weekend.
This is a side that has beaten every major rival in the country this season and has already secured StoneX victory, Northern Schools and Welsh Rally titles. Their quality, composure and attacking brilliance were clear throughout the competition, and even in the face of injury, illness and adversity, they still secured a top 16 finish in the Championship Division. That achievement alone is significant, but it is only part of the story. This 1st Team has been one of the finest Moreton has produced and has set an incredibly high standard through its talent, togetherness and consistency.
2nd Team
Moreton’s 2nd Team once again highlighted the impressive depth of the school’s lacrosse programme. In a sport where many larger schools can field several strong teams, Moreton continues to compete superbly at 2nd Team level and consistently punches well above its weight.
The team enjoyed an excellent run at Nationals, qualifying for the Championship Division and recording some outstanding results against highly regarded opposition. Their narrow knock-out exit was a tough way for the tournament to end, but it should not overshadow just how well they performed. This was a squad full of determination, skill and belief, and they represented Moreton brilliantly throughout.
Special recognition must go to captain Emily for her leadership and influence, and to Lily, whose return from Switzerland to play at Nationals was a wonderful example of commitment, loyalty and team spirit.
U15s
The U15s came into Nationals having already been crowned Northern Schools Champions, and they lived up to that billing with a series of determined and impressive performances. Despite travelling with a stretched squad and facing significant challenges with numbers, they showed resilience in abundance, securing four strong wins against quality opposition.
Their campaign may have ended earlier than they would have liked, but their efforts were nothing short of outstanding. Competing with such energy and fight against deeper squads was a real credit to the group, and they showed just how much character runs through this team.
U13s and U14s
There was plenty to celebrate among the younger age groups too. The U13s produced a superb tournament, surpassing expectations with a brilliant run to the Championship Division and a top 16 national finish. They played with confidence, maturity and real attacking intent, offering an exciting glimpse of what lies ahead.
The U14s were equally impressive. Taking on significantly larger schools, they showed real grit and belief to record notable wins and a draw against one of the country’s strongest lacrosse schools. Finishing as the highest-ranked team in Division 1 was a tremendous achievement and underlined the promise and potential within this group.
While this year’s National Schools’ Championships may not have ended with every headline Moreton had hoped for, they still told a powerful story: one of excellence, resilience and enduring ambition. Every team played its part in a week full of commitment and courage, and every player should be enormously proud of what she achieved. Moreton Hall lacrosse remains one of the strongest programmes in the country, and the future looks as exciting as ever.
