Forces Families

Moreton Hall is proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and has a long tradition of welcoming children from families who serve in the Armed Forces, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, and other public sector overseas workers. We acknowledge that Forces families face unique challenges and we can provide a stable, supportive environment in which the continuity of education is guaranteed.

Moreton Hall is one of the top independent day and boarding schools in the UK, ranking in the top 100 nationally in both GCSE and A Level results every year. Moreton is set in more than 100 acres of beautiful Shropshire countryside. Despite our rural locale, we are centrally located and within easy road and rail links of Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool. We can offer accompanied travel to and from all UK airports. These accessible links make Moreton the perfect choice for families based both in the UK and overseas.

We amend our fees in line with the Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA), or other public sector equivalent allowances, meaning that eligible families pay no more than the 10% of fees required through CEA for boarding and tuition.

In support of our Veterans or families who are not eligible for CEA, we are proud to offer a 10% discount on Boarding or Day fees.

Staff with Military and Public Sector Experience

Director of Operations Alan McTaggart is a military veteran with a full career serving both regimental duty and as a senior finance officer. He is well-placed to offer guidance on the CEA policy and claims process.

In his senior service Alan worked at MOD Main Building in Whitehall within Armed Forces Remuneration Policy where he was the British Army lead for advising on Allowances to service personnel. Relevant to his current role, and in further support of our Forces families, he was the key adviser on the current Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) policy.

On a personal level, in addition to being able to guide service families through the claim submission process, Alan has lived experience as a parent of a daughter who benefited from CEA, and through periods of exercise and operational deployment. His focus ensures the best possible tailored support is in place for our Military and Public Sector families with children at the school.

Moreton Hall is also fortunate to have experienced teaching staff that are understanding of the routines and challenges faced by our service families. Some are veterans, some with diplomatic experience and all with a pastoral focus that is best placed to support care for our pupils during periods of absence away from families.

Bursary Guarantee to Service Families

Moreton Hall is able to tailor a Bursary grant and Fee level so that it would link directly to the Military CEA rate once you have paid your compulsory 10%.

An example:

  • Boarding Senior rate Upper 4 (Year 9) is £12,295 plus VAT £2,459 = £14,754
  • The CEA Senior rate is currently £11,130.
  • Bursary Grant provided Y9 = 17.5%
  • Boarding and Tuition total after Bursary discount £12,172.05

*Rates example shown are for 1 Aug 25 onwards inclusive of VAT

The claimant would need to pay 10% through the CEA claim; adding this to the Allowance of £11,130 this would give £12,366.66. The Bursary grant will be tailored to match the gap between this amount and the level of Boarding and Tuition Fees (ie.£2,387.34 = 16.18%).

To reconcile this; Pupil Boarding Invoice £12,172.05 (after 17.5% Bursary discount), military claimant would have to pay 10% £1,217.20 for full boarding and tuition per term, this would leave a balance of £10,954.85 which is inside the CEA Rate of entitlement.

Support to our Civil Servants and Diplomat Service

Support to the HM Forces community is typical of the supporting framework and tailored support that would be available to all our overseas public sector workers such as Civil Servants, Embassy staff and Foreign Commonwealth Office staff.

Policy Guidance

CEA is available for children aged eight years and over. If you are eligible to claim CEA you must contact the MOD Children’s Education Advisory Service (CEAS) to obtain a unique serial number which then needs to be shown to the Joint Personnel Administration (JPA). You will then receive an eligibility certificate from the Pay and Allowances Casework and Complaints Cell (DBS PACCC).

The policy that guides Service Children’s Education entitlement is an open resource and you can search on the Internet using reference ‘JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances’. Chapter 14 provides the detailed guidance for CEA.

You can claim the CEA instalment three times a year, this will coincide with the distribution of fee invoices for pupils. At Moreton Hall invoices for parents can be printed early to allow timely submission of CEA Applications; these are personally managed by the Bursary team.

Please contact our admissions team, who will be happy to arrange a visit, admissions@moretonhall.com
