With exam season already in full swing, the Upper Sixth students are secure in the knowledge that whatever the outcome in August, they are fully prepared to take their next exciting steps into the big wide world. For the majority, this will involve car boots bursting with clothes airers, pots and pans and a homemade cake as they confidently arrive at university, waving off red-eyed parents as they chat to flat mates they have already connected with ‘virtually’. Some are venturing further afield with offers from universities in Australia and the US while a gap year awaits for those wanting a break from education in favour of travel and volunteering. Even the corporate world is beckoning for one budding executive who has opted for a Degree Apprenticeship, which offers the best of both worlds.
Our ‘What to Do On Results Day’ briefing ensured that all our students are aware of the importance of having a Plan A and a Plan B on results day. Plan B is not just a worst case scenario in case things go wrong, it can also include options for ‘trading up’ if results exceed expectations, or for altering plans completely if minds have changed over the summer. Whatever the individual situation, students are safe in the knowledge that the Next Steps department will be on hand, in person or virtually, to support them throughout the process.
As far as destinations and courses are concerned, this year has certainly not disappointed in terms of diversity. With offers in the bag from universities across the UK including Oxford, Imperial, UCL, Durham, Warwick, Edinburgh, Exeter and UAL, it is so exciting to see our students going on to study such an eclectic mix of subjects across all disciplines from Veterinary Bioscience, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering and Biotechnology in the STEM space, to Classics, English Literature, Linguistics, Fashion Marketing and Marine & Natural History Photography.
Whatever their chosen pathway, we wish them every success on the 15 August and look forward to raising a glass with many of them in the Front Hall.
