It was Tennis shoes off and dancing shoes on, last weekend, for Moreton Hall’s Assistant Principal, Alison McDonald as she took to the dance floor in Strictly Shropshire at the Lion Quays. Mrs McDonald is usually more likely to be found in the sports hall than in the ballroom but when she was asked if she would take part in the Strictly Shropshire fundraising event for local hospice, Hope House, she eagerly accepted.
Partnered with professional dancer and a World champion in Ballroom, Francis Cart, Mrs McDonald set out to master the Charleston, a dance full of speed, variety and fun. A timely visit to The Holroyd Community Theatre by Queen of the Ballroom, Shirley Ballas, here for a Booka Bookshop event, was an opportunity to get top tips from the very top on how to put on the ritz.
Tickets for the event sold out in an hour and on the night, 500 people gathered at an evening bursting with all of the glitz and sparkle of BBC favourite Strictly Come Dancing. Fourteen couples delighted the audience with every kind of dance and a fantastic time was had by all raising £81,000 for Hope House.
Reflecting on the event Mrs McDonald said: “I was so nervous ahead of time as dancing is totally out of my comfort zone and there were so many steps to remember. However, on the night, it all came together and it was so rewarding to achieve and have fun doing something I didn’t really believe I could. My message now to myself, and to anyone else, is when invited to take a risk and go outside your comfort zone, don’t overthink it – just say YES!”
