Moreton Hall’s Science department ran its ninth practice MMI Event with doctors from the RJAH hospital as well two local GPs. This event was an opportunity for 48 students from 19 local schools to practise their interview skills in preparation for those all important medical interviews.
Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) are used by most UK medical, dental and veterinary schools to interview candidates and it is difficult to gain experience of this format which often involves eight or ten different interview stations. Teaming up with Ruth Longfellow, Chief Medical Officer at the RJAH hospital in Gobowen, we have been able to run a practice event each Autumn before candidates attend their real interviews to help prepare them. It can be daunting when faced with a series of consecutive interviews. At this event the candidates not only receive interview practice but are also given feedback on their performances to help build their confidence and skill in this interview format.
For the second year running the MMI Event was hosted by The RJAH League of Friends and was held in the Veteran’s Orthopaedic Centre. Both students and doctors enjoyed the delicious cakes and drinks provided by the The League of Friends which kept everyone going during the long evening.
Huge thanks go to Ruth and her colleagues at the RJAH, most of whom came straight from treating patients to take part. As well as students and doctors each year we are very lucky to be able to call on the fabulous acting skills of our A-level Drama students who role-play tricky patients to test candidates’ abilities to interact with them. This year Libby and Issy, two MMI veterans in Upper Sixth, were joined by Tayler with some equally great performances from Chloe and Jenna in Lower Sixth.
The students really enjoyed the evening. As one of our own medical applicants emailed after the event: “I had an amazing time, and it was great meeting some fellow medical applicants! I’ve learnt so much.”
Head of Next Steps Catherine Ashworth, who also helped run the event said: “The event was invaluable for our medical applicants and those from other schools. It was wonderful to be able to include so many local schools.”
We were also supported by our top team of Science Technicians Joan Stonier and Steve Ferrington who organised the logistics with precision. We all agreed that the evening was a very worthwhile way to support local medical candidates and a great joint project between Moreton and the RJAH Hospital.
