Moreton Sixth student, Mariia, has been selected as a finalist in the global Northeastern University London essay writing competition out of 4,500 entries.
A Level Psychology student Mariia has been invited to the prestigious celebratory awards in London early next month in recognition of her 1,500 word essay submission which was centred around her chosen subject and the set theme of ‘How could psychology explain atrocious acts towards humans, such as during war times?’
The Northeastern University London competition is designed to engage a broad range of humanities and social sciences topics and judges reviewed entries from talented and intellectually curious students who demonstrated passion and academic potential in these subject areas.
Mariia commented: “I am delighted to have been chosen as a finalist in this competition and I would especially like to thank my Psychology teacher, Mr Jones, for supporting me through this process. This was a great opportunity for me to hone my independent research skills which will come in very handy when I get to university.”
Following the drinks reception and awards presentation Northeastern University London will meet with experts in their field for a skills workshop based on targeting places at top universities.
Mariia is currently studying A Levels in Psychology, Economics and Mathematics and hopes to pursue an application to a competitive US university next year. She is working closely with the Next Steps Careers department to realise this ambition and she is certainly putting herself in a strong position with her extra curricular achievements.
Psychology teacher Simon Jones said: “By being selected as a finalist, Mariia is within the top 12% of thousands of entries. This is such a huge achievement demonstrating Mariia’s commitment to her academic studies and her passion for learning.”
