the English department this year. The Poetry
Slam invited pupils to recite a poem in an
informal competition in front of peers. Spurred
on by the communal drive towards divisional
points, girls gave recitals that risked serious
damage to their street cred. It speaks volumes
of all our pupils that those who took the plunge
were not teased but lauded for it.
Our productions of The
Importance of Being Earnest
and Lady Windermere’s Fan also
attested to the readiness with
which our pupils give life to the
words on the page.
The fact that the latter is a set A Level text
is an added bonus, and we are indebted to
Mrs Thomas for her shrewd choice and We have witnessed the professionals in action
sensitive direction. on trips to Stratford to watch Much Ado about
Nothing and to Theatre Severn for An Inspector
Calls, and we have given younger pupils a taste
of what’s on offer in the Upper School through
the Prep School Oracy Competition and
Mrs Hodge’s inspired Year 6 teaching.
Ultimately, the classroom is only a small part
of the rich and active relationship our pupils
have with this most abundant and rewarding
of subjects. Creative engagement is at the core
of all academic appreciation and achievement,
and the English department is committed to its
continuation in the holistic education we provide
to all our pupils.
