The Importance of Community
and Responsibility in Year 6:
Preparing for Senior School
Year 6 is a pivotal stage in a
child’s primary school journey.
It marks the final year before transitioning to
senior school—a move that can be both exciting
and daunting. Fostering a strong sense of
community and developing roles of responsibility
play a crucial role in preparing children for the
challenges and opportunities ahead.
Community in the school setting provides a sense
of belonging and emotional security. When Year
6 pupils feel they are part of a supportive and
inclusive environment, they are more likely to
develop confidence, resilience, and a willingness
to participate.
At Moreton Hall Prep, staff play a key role in
nurturing this atmosphere by encouraging
teamwork, empathy, and mutual respect. Peer
relationships also become increasingly important,
as pupils learn to collaborate and support one
another—mirroring the social dynamics they will
encounter in senior school.

Equally important is the opportunity to take on
roles of responsibility.
Our Year 6 pupils take on
positions such as monitors,
reading buddies for younger
pupils, and school council
members. These roles allow
them to lead by example
and feel valued within the
school community.
Responsibility builds maturity and
independence—traits essential for the transition
to a more complex and less structured secondary
environment.
When pupils are given real responsibilities, they
learn to manage time, make decisions, and deal
with consequences. These skills are vital for
navigating the demands of senior school. For
