Lacrosse Invitational Tournament

Lacrosse has been part of the fabric of Moreton since 1913 and still reigns supreme. It was only fitting then that we welcomed senior clubs and schools from throughout England to share in pre-season matches at this year’s Invitational Tournament. Supporters, players and coaches were effusive and as parent Clare Downes enthused: “What a lovely day of lacrosse! It has become THE way to start the season.”

Tournament Organiser and Head of Lacrosse Coaching, Miss Harrington, commented: “This is designed to give teams a great opportunity to assess squads for the forthcoming season. Each team will have had six matches against teams they do not usually have the chance to play because of geography.” Indeed, the tournament was attended by Berkhamsted School, Sherborne, North London Collegiate, Stowe, Cheltenham Ladies’, to name but a few.

The event provided an ideal platform for schools to prepare all of their senior squads and many entered more than one team. The focus was very much on selection: no recording of scores, no trophy, but a real chance to observe and assess. In this convivial atmosphere there was even room to move players around. As Head of Lacrosse at Malvern St James, David Abini, acknowledged:

“Just wanted to say thank you for lending us your GK’s and players today!  Also thank you for putting on such a great tournament, always a good day out to play against a great range of teams!”

And it wasn’t just the players who were in training. The neutral umpires were also afforded the opportunity to hone their skills for the new 10 a-side season.

First Team Captain, Hattie, summed it up: “The tournament was an ideal start to the season and for the multiple tournaments that we’ll have this term.

“Lacrosse at Moreton has taught me to never give up on what you want and never underestimate your ability.”
